Please join us for a series of free movement classes / workshops as part of:
“Refraction”
A new Research Performance project
This is a research performance project led by Helen Duncan, inviting the community to unpack the phenomenon of the ‘invisible woman’ from our personal perspectives through movement, dance, theatre and play - Don’t worry there’s no actual ‘performance’…not yet anyway! ;)
As part of this project we will meet, dance, chat & ruminate. We’ll move, we’ll dance and we’ll enjoy taking up space!
Mondays 10.30am (Geelong West)
or
Mondays 7pm (Geelong CBD)
What’s involved /expected?
We will meet for a 1hour movement / workshop class each Monday and occasionally we’ll continue with a chat afterwards - perhaps with coffee in hand!
You can take the movement classes / workshops as seriously as you like or just dive in and have some fun! What’s right for my body is different to what’s right for yours and through movement and play we’ll discover what fits best for each of our individual selves within the dance studio environment.
We’ll spend an hour together each Monday to move our bodies through dance and movement - we will improvise, try out a bit of ballet, plus a bit of contemporary dance and turn our hand at some creative movement tasks.
As part of our research we will dive into some conversations around the ‘invisible woman’ phenomenon.
This project runs from Monday 5th May - Monday 30th June, 2025.
What is the ‘invisible woman phenomenon’?
The ‘invisible women’ phenomenon describes the feeling of being overlooked, dismissed, or devalued by society, particularly as women age, often starting in their 40s and 50s.
Can I just join you for the class/workshop?
It’s completely optional to participate in the conversational component of this project and all responses will remain anonymous. You don’t need to agree with the premise or be a certain age to participate. Ability to participate in safe, respectful and non threatening conversation is the only must have! All adults interested in exploring themes through movement and dance are welcome to attend.
Suitable for the absolute beginners as well as the seasoned pro!
This project has been supported by a City of Greater Geelong Community Grant

FAQs
-
Comfortable clothes you can move in. This is a judgment free zone, so come in your pyjamas or your flowiest Kate Bush inspired attire - totally up to you!
I would encourage both bare feet and socks throughout the class. Ballet shoes are suitable if you prefer a little more grip on the floor. Pilates and barre socks probably aren’t quite right.
-
Water bottle and a sense of humour and adventure.
-
Absolutely not! Absolute beginners are especially encouraged. Equally if you’re a seasoned pro - you’ll also feel right at home.
